The July 29, 2021 session of the NPI series "Ask What You Want to Know" panel discussion on the "the 100th anniversary of the Chinese Communist Party and the future of the Xi Jinping administration."
The NPI "Ask What You Want to Know" series is a forum in which leading researchers discuss issues of current interest and field questions from the attendees. NPI President Fujisaki Ichiro served as moderator of the event. The panelists, NPI Executive Director of Research ad interim, Kawashima Shin, Professor, the University of Tokyo and Tsugami Toshiya, President of Tsugami Workshop, Ltd. and NPI Visiting Fellow, answered questions from the attendees after presentations in the panel discussion. Both panelists gave their frank views on the following questions, and the discussion was very fruitful.
1. Will Xi Jinping continue to concentrate power and who will succeed him?
Xi Jinping has strong popular support and seems to have no resistance anymore. Is this understanding, correct? Who would a possible successor be?
2. How much control does the Communist Party have over the people?
The Xi Jinping administration has been strengthening its control over the private sector, for example by suppressing Jack Ma, the CEO of Alibaba Group. Will this trend continue for the time being? If the regime does waver, what would be the trigger?
3. Will the status quo change by force and "" diplomacy continue?
On May 31, 2021, at a meeting of the , the highest decision-making body of the Communist Party, Xi Jinping stated that it is important to "aim to make a credible, lovable and respectable China" in order to improve the image of the nation. Will this result in a change in "Wolf Warrior" diplomacy? Or will such an aim remain superficial?
4. Is the U.S. Biden administration's stance on China genuine?
Will the confrontational line continue, basically sticking to the principle of what is fair and just? If it were turn around, what would be the trigger?
5. What is the future of the U.S. National Defense Authorization Act and China's countervailing legislation?
