On July 17, 2026, Dr. Philip Shetler-Jones, Senior Research Fellow at the Royal United Services Institute for Defence and Security Studies (RUSI), visited the Nakasone Peace Institute (NPI).

Dr. Shetler-Jones exchanged views with members of NPI's Research Center for Economic Security and Maritime Security Study Group. Their discussions covered a range of issues, including the security environment in the Indo-Pacific and Euro-Atlantic regions, the situation surrounding Taiwan, Japan-UK cooperation in the fields of diplomacy and security, and NATO's engagement in the Indo-Pacific.

Both sides shared the view that Japan-UK cooperation is of great importance in such areas as maintaining peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific, the Euro-Atlantic region, and the Taiwan Strait; promoting economic and maritime security; strengthening relations between NATO and the Indo-Pacific Partners (IP4); and addressing hybrid threats, including information warfare in the cognitive domain. They also reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthening cooperation between the two institutions in the future.
